Gates-MacGinitie Reading Tests (GMRT)
The GMRT is designed to provide a general assessment of reading achievement. Levels 4 through 10/12 consist of a Vocabulary test and Comprehension test. Sample questions and test booklet format are the same for these levels. Therefore any combination of these levels can be given at the same time.
For the vocabulary section, students are presented 45 test words in brief context. (The test measures what words student already know – not what they can determine using context clues, etc.) Students are expected to select the word/phrase that means most nearly the same as the test word. The words become increasingly difficult as the test progresses. The students have 20 minutes to complete this section.
The comprehension section contains 11 short passages from published books/periodicals. Students are expected to make inferences, draw conclusions, determine meanings of words from the passage, and have a literal understanding of the text. There are 48 questions and 35 minutes.
Scoring the GMRT is simple. The scoring charts provide the Percentile Rank, Stanine, Grade Equivalent, etc. This information provides data for differentiating instruction, identifying students who are ready for more advanced instruction, grouping, and identifying students for special instruction and or further testing.
